Chandratal – The Moon Lake of the Himalayas

Hidden high in the rugged mountains of Himachal Pradesh lies a place that feels almost unreal—Chandratal, the enchanting “Moon Lake” of the Himalayas. Located at an altitude of about 4,300 meters in the remote Spiti Valley, Chandratal is a pristine high-altitude lake known for its crystal-clear blue waters, dramatic surroundings, and surreal beauty.

The name Chandratal comes from the Hindi words Chandra (moon) and Tal (lake), inspired by the lake’s crescent-shaped form. As sunlight moves across the sky, the lake changes colors—from deep blue to emerald green and even silvery grey—creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. Surrounded by barren mountains, snow-clad peaks, and vast open skies, Chandratal offers a peaceful escape far removed from the chaos of city life.

Itinerary

Start early to beat the traffic out of Chandigarh and head towards the Himalayas on the Himalayan Expressway. On the way, you will be passing through Chail, a hill station in the lower Himalayan range and home to beautiful flower orchards.

After a short lunch break, you will head towards Narkanda, known as the fruit bowl of Himachal Pradesh.

Apple and cherry trees line the roadsides and the tall Deodhar fir trees spread their sweet aroma all around. End the day after reaching the hotel in Narkanda.

Wake up early in the morning to experience one of the most beautiful sunrises. After a delicious breakfast, you will leave for one of the most beautiful views of Kinnaur Valley.

Travel along the Sutlej river till Karcham from where you will take a right turn towards Chitkul following the Baspa river. Chitkul is the last inhabited village before the Indo-China border and here you can also visit the famous ‘Hindustan ka Akhri Dhaba’ for an amazing meal.

After having a hearty breakfast, you will leave for Nako. Drive through the Indo – Tibetan highway along with the small picturesque hamlets like Reckong Peo, which is the main town of the Kinnaur district.

Pass through Khab Bridge that marks the confluence of Spiti and the Satluj River. You will then proceed to Nako which is the last village of Kinnaur Valley.

Upon reaching Nako, Visit the Nako Gompa situated at the banks of the serene Nako Lake which was established in the 11th century. 

Overnight stay at a hotel/ homestay in Nako. 

Wake up in the morning and have a healthy breakfast. Hit the roads and just as you cross Sumdo you will be entering the Spiti Valley. Just 3 Km after Sumdo, take a detour on the right through the gate to visit the 500-Year-Old Mummy in the Gue Village.

Stop by the “Ajanta of the Himalayas’ – Tabo Monastery, which is the oldest continuously operating Buddhist enclave in both India and the Himalayas.

Later, start a scenic drive towards the secluded land of Pin Valley – which houses the exotic and endangered Himalayan species including the Snow leopard and Siberian ibex, Tibetan Gazelle, etc. 

You will then proceed towards Kaza where you will be spending the night at a hotel.

Post early morning breakfast, go out to explore the spectacular beauty of Kaza. Visit the Key Gompa Monastery nestled in a bowl-shaped valley of the small village Langza in Spiti valley.

You will then go farther up the valley to the picturesque village of Kibber that will lead your way to the Chicham Bridge, the highest bridge in Asia. Langza is considered to be one of the highest villages in the world with a motorable road and the nearby Komic Village is the highest village.

Hikkim is close to Kaza which is one of the highest year-round inhabited locations in India. Return back to your hotel in Kaza for an overnight stay.

We drive to one of the most photogenic places of the Spiti Valley – the Chandratal Lake. On the way we pass through the high altitude pass of Kunzum La. Stop by at the stupa and pay tribute to the local goddess, “Kuzum Mata” as she is called. 

At 15,000 feet above sea-level the Kuzum Pass connects Kullu and Lahaul to the Spiti Valley. Chandratal Lake – A visual marvel, this stunning blue coloured Lake is set at an altitude of 4300 meters above sea level in the heart of high Himalayas and is a must see on a full moon night. It derives its name, “Chandra” (Moon) and “Taal” (Lake) from the crescent shape of the lake. 

Watch the lake change colours from crystal clear shades of blur to emerald greens by dusk. Live your dream of camping comfortably in state of the art tents in the Himalayas as you spend your evening gazing at the Milky Way and the millions of stars on a clear night. Overnight at a camp 2 kms away from Chandratal Lake. (tent stay)

Enjoy morning breakfast with spectular view of Chandratal & later depart to Manali.

To reach this pristine lake, at an altitude of 4270 m, you have to trek through the most difficult roads and glaciers, but the views are worth every effort. So, it lies on top of the bucket lists of expert trekkers.

Transfer to Manali. Later in the evening free to explore the Shopping Malls (Mall Road & IBEX Market) of Manali.Overnight at Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at the Manali hotel.

Post breakfast at the hotel, you will head towards Chandigarh. Travel through the slithering roads following the Satluj and passing the rich Deodhar forests. 

Once you reach Chandigarh, this will mark the end of your amazing tour to Spiti Valley.

  • Entrance, guide or camera fee.
  • Medical and travel insurance
  • Any transportation which is not mentioned in the itinerary.
  • Expenses caused by factors beyond our control like Rail and Flight Delays| Roadblocks| Vehicle Malfunctions| Political Disturbances etc.
  • Anything not mentioned under “inclusions”.

Domestic Cancellation Policy

  • Once the booking is done- 20% of package cost will be charged as a cancellation fee.
  • 30 days prior to departure- 30% of package cost will be charged as a cancellation fee.
  • 15 days prior to departure- 50% of package cost will be charged as a cancellation fee.
  • 10 days till the departure- 100% of package cost will be charged as a cancellation fee.
  • No Show No Refund.

Payment Policy

  • 25% of total land package cost shall be paid to initiate a booking if the travel date is more than 30 days from the date of bookings.
  • 50% of total land package cost amount shall be paid before 15 days of the departure date.
  • 25% of total land package cost amount before 7 days of the departure date.
  • Any Flight bookings shall be paid 100% in advance.
  • Full payment of package cost is required if the booking date is 7 days before the departure date.
